Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT
Norwalk is known in the state and surrounding areas to be the home of The Maritime Aquarium. The aquarium was founded in 1988 in an old factory that was turned into the aquarium. Today patrons have access to over 30 exhibits and more than 200 different marine species. The aquarium not only teaches the public about the fascinating world of the sea’s, but also conducts research, conservation, and rehabilitating injured mammals.
This aquarium has stuff to do for all ages and walks of life. Walking through the main atrium you will she dazzling displays from rescued seals while learning all about how they hunt, play, interact, and how intelligent they are. Did you know that the navy uses trained seals to conduct deep sea dive and recoveries. Further down the atrium is the children’s favorite exhibit, touch a sting ray. Don’t worry the barbs have been removed. Walking right up to the tank children can place their hands down into the water as sting rays brush their hands. The giggling won’t be easy to stop even after hey leave the string rays.
The Maritime has recently added a new exhibit to their list, sea turtle nursery. Get to see young sea turtles swim and play, while learning about them. Remember don’t tap on the glass vibrations can travel through water will disturb the little critters. When lunch time is approaching you can eat in the food court or explore the surrounding streets for better tasting food. They have an IMAX theater that routinely plays documentaries, but on special occasions you can catch a movie. Coming up on December 15th they are playing the new Star Wars movie, now you can have the best of two worlds exploring the seas and space. Fans of shark week will love the 110,000-gallon shark tank; on Thursdays and the weekends you can watch their dive team interact with the shark while they feed them, on November 25th Santa Clause will be diving with the sharks to given them presents.
There is another section for children to interact with more sea creature’s starfish, crabs, horse shoe crabs, and more. Maritime charters two and a half hour cruises in the sound on the R/V Spirit of the Sound. Some of these are seal-spotting, marine life encounters, lighthouses on the sound, sunset , and TGIF cruises. In October they have a special cruise for adults to celebrate Octoberfest.
